Feast of Ss. Simon and Jude

10-27-2019Pastor's LetterFr. John C. Granato

My Dear Friends,

Tomorrow is the fast day of St. Simon and St. Jude, two of the apostles. There is not much known about either apostle other than their names, but St. Jude is a very popular saint for many Catholics. I remember during our football games at Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury, we would pray before the game started and after the Our Father or the Hail Mary. We would add, St. Jude, help of the hopeless, pray for us. If we won the game, when we prayed after the game ended we would add, St. Jude, help of the hopeless, thank you. Some believe that the reason St. Jude became the saint for hopeless causes is that he shared a name with the apostle who betrayed our Lord. Here is one of the many novena prayers used for St. Jude.

KLove 30 Day Challenge

10-20-2019Pastor's LetterFr. John C. Granato

My Dear Friends,

I am writing this letter while attending the priest convocation. It occurred to me that thirteen years ago on October 22, 2006, I began to listen to contemporary Christian praise and worship music. It occurred during my conversion to Christ. Today in Connecticut we have that music on the radio on 106.9 K-LOVE. The music has a way of reaching into your heart. Some of my favorite artists are Third Day, Casting Crowns, Mercy Me, Jeremy Camp, Kutless and Matt Maher. I encourage you to try the K-LOVE challenge by listening only to Christian contemporary music for thirty days. Your life will truly be changed.

May God Bless,
Father John

The Month of Mary

10-13-2019Pastor's LetterFr. John C. Granato

My Dear Friends,

In this month of October, the month of Mary, I want to stress once again the importance of praying the rosary. After the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the rosary is the most powerful prayer. The devil hates Mary and those who are dedicated to and honor Mary. The devil also cowers in fear when confronted with Mary, for he knows that she has defeated him as it says in Genesis chapter 3. In some of the images of the Immaculate Conception, we see the Blessed Mother stomping on the head of a serpent. And many exorcists have said that the devil and other demons admit to being afraid when they hear the name of Mary. With fifty three Hail Marys, the rosary is indeed a powerful weapon against evil. When we are placed under her mantle, she protects us. There are so many titles of protection that we can be placed under, including the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

40 Days for Life

10-06-2019Pastor's LetterFr. John C. Granato

My Dear Friends,

October is a month dedicated to pro-life. Many people say that being pro-life is a political issue and that abortion has become a political issue. When they say this, what they really mean is that there is a separation of Church and State; hence the great number of Catholic politicians who support keeping abortion legal. The Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade has made sure that abortion would stay in the political realm thereby giving leverage to the faulty separation of Church and State argument.

Ironically, the same Catholic politicians who find abortion to be in line with their Catholic belief system, while at the same time decrying the bishops who are trying to make abortion illegal, are the same politicians who have no problem using Sacred Scripture to defend their more progressive causes. It does seem to many people that the separation of Church and State is only invoked by politicians and media when it comes to abortion whereas these same people use religion to further "social justice" projects.
