Pentecost Sunday

05-31-2020Pastor's LetterFr. John C. Granato

My Dear Friends,

Today is Pentecost Sunday! Come, Holy Spirit fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love!

For the last two weeks I have been sharing with you private prayers for vesting and prayers before Mass. Today, I want to share with you two more prayers for the preparation before receiving Holy Communion. These two prayers are to be prayed by the priest during the singing of the Lamb of God. In the traditional Latin Mass (the extraordinary form) both of these prayers needed to be said by the priest. Since the reform of the Mass in 1970, the church requires the priest to pray only one of these prayers. There does not seem to be any good reason to cut a prayer but the reformed Mass did that many times during the revision.

Prayers for the daily Celebration of Mass - Part 3

05-24-2020Pastor's LetterFr. John C. Granato

My Dear Friends,

For the last two weeks I have shared with you the preparation prayers and vesting prayers for the priest before the celebration of Mass. There are also two very long prayers, one by St. Ambrose and the other by St. Thomas Aquinas, asking God to help prepare ourselves spiritually for the reception of the Holy Communion. The St. Thomas Aquinas prayer is actually reprinted in the Pew Missal section of prayers on page 527. There is also another prayer, a prayer of thanksgiving, by St. Thomas Aquinas to be prayed after Mass on that same page.

Prayers for the daily Celebration of Mass - Part 2

05-17-2020Pastor's LetterFr. John C. Granato

My Dear Friends,

Last week, I shared with you the prayers that are supposed to be prayed by the priest as he vests for Mass. They are very powerful reminders for me and for all the priests as we prepare to offer Mass. There are also two other prayers in the Roman Missal that a priest prays before Mass that also reminds him what he is about to do. The first prayer is to the Blessed Mother. "O most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of tenderness and mercy, I, a miserable and unworthy sinner, fly to you with all the affection of my heart and I beseech your motherly love, that, as you stood by your most dear Son, while he hung on the Cross, so, in your kindness, you may be pleased to stand by me, a poor sinner, and all Priests who today are offering the Sacrifice here and throughout the entire holy Church, so that with your gracious help we may offer a worthy and acceptable oblation in the sight of the most high and undivided Trinity. Amen."

Prayers for the daily Celebration of Mass

05-10-2020Pastor's LetterFr. John C. Granato

My Dear Friends,

One positive aspect for me through all of this is the daily celebration of Mass. Now, I have always celebrated Mass daily, but ever since my ordination, I would pray certain prayers that are said while vesting before Mass. That discipline became a bit sporadic over the last several years, only occasionally praying these prayers. Since I am alone in the sacristy every day, I have found the time once again to reconnect with these beautiful prayers. I think it is helpful to you to know how a priest prepares for Mass, since there is no greater thing a priest can do every day than the celebration of Mass.

Good Shepherd Sunday

05-03-2020Pastor's LetterFr. John C. Granato

My Dear Friends,

Today is Good Shepherd Sunday. In the midst of this crisis, we are all experiencing how much we need our shepherds. My own personal feeling is that religion, and the practice of religion, is essential. We are keeping liquor stores open and fast food restaurants are open, yet the celebration of the sacraments has been suspended. The spiritual life of the person is so extremely important. Jesus himself says to not fear the one who can destroy the body rather fear the one who can destroy the soul.
