July: the month of the Precious Blood of Jesus

My Dear Friends,

May is the month devoted to the Blessed Mother. June is the month dedicated to the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ. This month, July, we celebrate a month dedicated to the Precious Blood of our Lord. On the www.catholicculture.org website, we read the following, "The Precious Blood which we worship is the Blood which the Savior shed for us on Calvary and reassumed at His glorious Resurrection; it is the Blood which courses through the veins of His risen, glorified, living body at the right hand of God the Father in heaven; it is the Blood made present on our altars by the words of Consecration; it is the Blood which merited sanctifying grace for us and through it washes and beautifies our soul and inaugurates the beginning of eternal life in it."

Just as the Israelites were saved by the blood of the lamb, poured out during the Exodus and saving them from death in Egypt, Christians are saved by the Blood of the Lamb, poured out for us on the Cross to save us from eternal death. We are washed clean in the Precious Blood of the Lamb of God. "It is said that the Blessed Virgin venerated the Most Precious Blood of her infant Son on the day of His circumcision as she collected the first relics of His Precious Blood on a piece of cloth. On that momentous occasion she united her tears with that of the Word Incarnate on account of not so much of the sensible pain but of His supernatural sorrow for the hard-heartedness of mortals."

It was the first of seven Blood-Sheddings of Our Divine Savior, the rest being: The Agony in the Garden, The Scourging at the Pillar, The Crowning with Thorns, The Way of the Cross, The Crucifixion, and The Piercing of His Heart.

One particular prayer for the Precious Blood is the following: Precious Blood of Jesus, infinite price of sinful man's redemption, both drink and laver of our souls, Thou who dost plead continually the cause of man before the throne of infinite mercy; from the depths of my heart, I adore Thee, and so far as I am able, I would requite Thee for the insults and outrages which Thou dost continually receive from human beings, and especially from those who rashly dare to blaspheme Thee. Who would not bless this Blood of infinite value? Who doth not feel within himself the fire of the love of who shed it all for us? What would be my fate, had I not been redeemed by this Divine Blood? Who hath drawn it from the veins of my Savior, even to the last drop? Ah, this surely was the work of love. O infinite love, which has given us this saving balm! O balm beyond all price, welling up from the fountain of infinite love, grant that every heart and every tongue may be enabled to praise Thee, magnify Thee and give Thee thanks both now and for evermore. Amen.

There are also novena prayers and chaplets for the Precious Blood that are easily available on the internet. And just for clarification, when we receive the Eucharistic Host at Mass, we are receiving His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. It is not a requirement that we receive the Precious Blood from the chalice for the whole Christ is present in both species of the Eucharist. May

God bless,
Fr. John
